Our day begins with an early breakfast. We then shuttle to the top of Irazú Volcano to visit the lunar like landscape and enjoy the views of the two craters. Inside this national park we mount the bikes for the 7-mile descent to the foothills of the nearby Turrialba Volcano. After a brief rest enjoying local delicacies we continue our ride down the slopes of the volcano to Turrialba town, Costa Rica’s white water rafting hub.

Lodging is at: Hotel Turrialtico or similar (www.turrialtico.com)

Total riding distance is 20 miles with a possible extension to 24 miles.

Day 3 – La Marta Private Reserve

La Marta Private Reserve, located near Turrialba, is a successful example of private conservation efforts and a haven for local plants and wildlife. From 1875 until 1920, La Marta was a successful coffee farm and mill.  After 1920, however, changes in local farming and coffee milling practices led to the sudden shutdown of the facilities and their abandonment. Today nature can be seen taking back the site and the surrounding forest once again dominates the landscape.

Our ride to La Marta start from our hotel high above Turrialba and takes us through sugarcane fields and coffee plantations until we reach the Pejibaye Valley, where the surrounding rainforest will follow us until we reach our destination.

Lodging is back at Turrialtico.

Total riding distance: 13 miles one way or double that if you ride back to Turrialtico.

Meals: breakfast and lunch.

Day 4 – Cerro de la Muerte Downhill

Cerro de la Muerte means “mountain of death,” but don’t let that get to you. We begin our ride at 7,500 feet above sea level near the town of Santa María de Dota and descend on gravel roads and doubletrack down to the Pacific Ocean. Along the way we will ride through coffee plantations, primary and secondary temperate rainforest, subtropical rainforest, tropical rainforest and end up by the Paquita River near Quepos.

Lodging is at: Hotel Doce Lunas (www.docelunas.com) in Jacó.

Total riding distance is 37.5 miles with shorter options

Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
