  Hiking or Trekking?
Lava Tours operates hiking day trips in very special places. No special trekking equipment is necessary. We provide hydration and snacks, you just bring along raingear, sturdy walking shoes and your desire to get to know Costa Rica on foot.

Will I see wildlife?
Covering only 0.01 percent of the Earth’s landmass, Costa Rica is believed to host approximately 5 percent of its biodiversity. Now, that does not mean that you will definitely see jaguar or other wild cats, but most probably you will be able to enjoy over 13.000 plant species, including 1,300 varieties of orchids and more than 850 species of birds, 209 mammal species, 220 species of reptiles, and 163 species of amphibians.

La Marta Hike - Rated Intermediate  NEW
La Marta Private Reserve, located 15 miles from Turrialba, is a successful example of private conservation efforts and a haven for local plants and wildlife. From 1875 until 1920, La Marta was a successful coffee farm and mill. After 1920, however, changes in local farming and coffee milling practices led to the sudden shutdown of the facilities and their abandonment. Today nature can be seen taking back the site and the surrounding forest once again dominates the landscape. Our hike inside La Marta starts at the old coffee mill and then takes us deep into primary rainforest. Total hike time is three hours.

Price per person: $85. Request more information here.

Turrialba Volcano Rumble - Rated Advanced NEW
Turrialba Volcano is one of the few volcanoes where the hiker can descend into the crater. This towering giant is Irazú's sister volcano and one of the least visited parks in Costa Rica. Our hike starts from a quaint farming town set in the foothills of the volcano and over the course of three hours takes us to the top of the mountain, where we will be able to appreciate the majestic crater. The descent into the crater is a one-hour hike on narrow trails. Inside the crater we will be able to appreciate the unique ecosystem and minerals found normally deep underground. Total hike time is five to six hours.
