A cascading pristine waterfall, colorful orchid and butterfly gardens, pesky hummingbirds and lush primary rainforests are just a few of the many jewels that you will experience on this tour. We have carefully designed an itinerary that will leave you forever in love with Costa Rica.
Day 1 - Arrival
After you arrival we will transfer you to secluded Bajos del Toro where you will stay at a private lodge set in a 1000 acre protected forest. En route we stop in Zarcero, a small farming town where Ticos still live a life well connected to the land.
Total walking distance: 1 km warm up hike
Day 2 - Hike in Bajos del Toro to Fátima Waterfall
Today´s hike is the perfect walk in the woods! We start from the lodge across a crystal clear stream and venture into secondary and then primary rainforest. After some climbing up steep switchbacks we are rewarded with the pristine Fátima Waterfall set deep in the rainforest.
Total walking distance: 4.4 km
Day 3 - Luna Nueva
A visit to Costa Rica is not complete without a visit to Luna Nueva, an organic and biodynamic farm where we will learn about medicinal plants, biodigestors and ecology. After lunch we continue on to La Fortuna and the Ecotermales private hot springs.
Total walking distance: 1 km guided walk in the gardens
Day 4 - Arenal Volcano National Park and canopy tour
Arenal Volcano is Costa Rica's most active volcano. Today we get to hike closer to the mountain to see its molten rocks tumble down from the mountain (from a safe distance). Afterwards we are treated to an exhilarating zipline canopy tour and lunch.
Total walking distance: 7.4 km
Day 5 - Float safari
The Peñas Blancas river is rich with wildlife: several types of heron, crocodiles, poison dart frogs, howler monkeys and toucan are some of the species that are easily seen on this comfortable river trip. We also visit don Pedro's farm, founded in 1937, to learn about his experience living off the land in a simple way.
Day 6 - Poás Volcano and Bosque del Niño
Poás Volcano boasts one of the widest craters in the world. We will hike to the crater and then hike from this national park through primary forest to Bosque del Niño conservation area near Grecia. During this two hour hike we will marvel at how the forest adapts to changes in elevation.
Total walking distance: 4 km
Day 7 - La Hilda and Doka coffee farms and Amigos de las Aves
No visit to Costa Rica would be complete without a visit to a coffee farm. After all, in the mid-1800s the country developed largely due to coffee farming. La Hilda and Doka are two award-winning farms owned by our friends the Vargas family of Alajuela. During our walk we will learn about the farm's social and environmental commitment as well as what makes their coffee one of the best coffees in the world.
In the afternoon we will visit Ara Project, a macaw breeding and reintroduction project hosted by Amigos de las Aves, a not-for-profit group based in Costa Rica that currently keeps the world's largest collection of Great Green Macaws.
Total walking distance: 6.4 km
